Allergy and immunology - Find an immunologist

Allergy and immunology is that branch of medicine which treats various allergies in the human body. A physician trained to diagnose, manage, prevent and treat allergies is called an allergist or an immunologist. He undertakes special studies to manage different kinds of allergies, different types of auto immune diseases, asthma, and other inherited immunodeficiency diseases.

In the field of Allergy and Immunology, treatment is also provided to different types of allergies like allergic reactions to certain food, animals and medicines, eczema, hives, hay fever, pneumonia, thrush and sinusitis.
The patient’s thorough history is taken before treatment is begun. All his symptoms, home/work/school environment is considered and his family history is also delved into. Before any sort of treatment is begun a skin test for his sensitivity to drugs is taken along with other drugs. Once these are taken into account the allergist/immunologist are better able to mange the problems.

An Allergist/immunologist is a doctor who has completed four years of special training in the branch of pediatrics or internal medicine. He also needs to get a certificate from American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI).It is a 2 year study program and at the conclusion of it he is awarded the certificate.
