Anesthesiology
The expertise gained to administer general anesthesia falls under the branch of Anesthesiology. It is generally used when a patient has to undergo surgery of any kind. The administration of general anesthesia leads to unconsciousness, relaxation of muscles, and sensation loss in the body. The patient doesn’t feel any painful sensations and becomes unconscious once the anesthetic drugs are administered.
It is very important that the anesthetists are well qualified. The dosage of the drug has to be administered very carefully. Both, under dosage and over dosage may prove to be fatal. Before administering the drug a complete history of the patient is taking. At times blood pressure may go down once anesthesia is administered. Hence constant monitoring of the blood pressure is essential.
The anesthesia may be administered in gaseous form which the patient is made to inhale, or in liquid form. At times it may b given intravenously.
The patient is not given anything to eat and drink before he is administered anesthesia. There is very little risk of the patent developing any complications because of anesthesia but there are risks of stroke, heart attack, brain damage and even death. The risk depends on the age weight, sex, general health, allergies and smoking and drinking habit of the patent. |
