The drugs used for the treatment of ADHD are mostly methylphenidate and amphetamine. These drugs are quite effective and they do increase the concentration of the child. However these drugs have the highest potential for abuse. They have a high dependency ratio and are being abused on a very large scale. Amphetamine has been prescribed to 2 year old children whereas in actual practice it is not allowed to be given to a child less than 6 years of age. In some countries and regions up to 20% of students use these stimulant drugs to develop their concentration indicating the high ratio of abuse. Thereby the need of alternative medicine is mandatory.
Herbal medicines which act as stimulants are commonly used in this disorder and have proven quite effective. Caffeine is used in this regard however it has not passed the clinical trials completely. This is due to the reason that it has side effects of its own and has failed to match the affectivity produced by conventional therapy. It can also results in the remission of sings and symptoms after it is excluded from the diet further decreasing its usefulness.
There have been many other herbs identified which have neuro stimulant effects and these may be helpful in the treatment of ADHD. Ginko herb increases the blood flow to the brain and itself acts as a natural antioxidant thereby stimulating the nerves and having a stimulant effect on the brain. Brahmi is another herb which is known to be a cognitive enhance. It protects the brain from free radical damage even better than the conventional drugs used in this regard. It is an Ayurvedic herb and has a long history.
Siberian ginseng is a useful herb and helps an individual fight against stress and through this property it acts as a cognitive enhancer. It also prevents the free radical damage to the brain further proving its significance. Gotu kola is known to decrease the adrenal cortisone levels during stress whereas it is also known to a cognitive enhancer and is very useful in the vascular disorders of the brain. Green oat leaves are not only an antispastic herb but are also useful as a tonic to increase cognition. These are not immediately effective like caffeine but are very useful as a tonic if used for longer durations of time.
Another alternative line of therapy is the use of Chinese herbs and medicine. These herbs are traditionally thought to maintain the balance of the body which is especially useful in ADHD which is a disease without a clear cut etiology. The Chinese herb used for ADHD is called Tioshen liquor which has proved quite beneficial in the treatment of ADHD. Other Chinese formulas have also proven very effective and are more useful even than the conventional therapy with much less side effects.
Homeopathic medicines are the most controversial ones used in the treatment of ADHD. The homoeopathic medicines though regarded to be useless by a number of doctors have no doubt significantly improved the conditions of many ADHD patients. The homeopathic remedies used for the treatment of ADHD include cina which is a type of cactus and has been useful in treating various ADHD patients specially the ones which have some sort of aggression. Stramomium another homeopathic remedy may be extremely useful for those ADHD patients who do have mood swings quite often.
It is also believed that the symptoms caused by ADHD are somewhat related to diet. Therefore diet therapy may also be useful in helping a few patients suffering from ADHD. In it high levels of sugar are banned.
