Even if it seems hard to believe, some people are predisposed to become binge eaters, from the very day they are born. But this doesn’t mean they can not be cured, or that they will necessarily become persons that will suffer from this condition. The genetics behind binge eating must be mixed with a series of emotional and social facts, before it turns a person into a binge eater.
Unfortunately, even people that have no genetics behind binge eating also turn to this, so a person like me who has plenty of physical reasons to turn to binge eating has no chance in nowadays society. Stress causes me to eat more and faster. Sometimes, and you must know what I’m saying, I don’t even have more than 3 minutes to eat my lunch. And since I am a binge eater I try to eat as much as possible because I am terrified that I will feel hungry later. Sometimes I go to the toilet with a bar of chocolate, just to get some more calories in. The truth is that, besides genetics causes for binge eating, I am also very influenced by my emotions, and I can not stop thinking about food, no matter how much I’ve just ate. After I finish something, I plan the next so-called meal. I can’t seem to go on without knowing exactly when I will be eating next. And of course I can not go for more than one hour without snacking on something.
Doctors have discovered recently that there are some genetics abnormalities that make a person more predisposed to binge eating than other people. Some people are influenced by this since birth, because their brains are not sending the right signals. A part of our brain is the one responsible for appetite. If this brain part is not functioning properly, then we don’t know when we are hungry and when we have eaten enough. Also, some a genetic abnormality found in every human gene of the persons that are binge eating causes them to find food more vital that normal. These persons are truly addicted to food, any kind of food, and they should be treated like addicts, that’s the only real way to cure this addiction, because their genetic mutations make them different from normal people. Some doctors show that if the serotonin is not present is normal amounts in our brains; we might also be very inclined to turn into binge eaters.
Genetics behind binge eating are not the final factor, and some people that are born with these disorders can turn out to be fine when they become adults. Others however will fall into the social traps and will add up to the binge eating factors they already present. Finally, the result is a food addiction that is uncontrollable and unstoppable. At least if you try everything on your own.
Getting help will determine whether you have any causes that are genetic or not. Because if you do present genetic binge eating causes you will need a medical treatment to correct them and to keep them under control while trying to control the emotional causes that trigger the eating episodes.
Most binge eaters, as me, have been also diagnosed with a more or less severe genetic disorder, and the drugs that help the hormones and brain chemicals remain in balance do help in diminishing appetite and also help in controlling the urge to eat at the most inappropriate moments. Being too stubborn or ashamed to even try getting help will take you nowhere, because binge eating can not be cured alone. This is a condition in which you need frequent and stable support, and firm guidance, otherwise you might end up again in front of a 2 pound bowl of French fries that you’ll eat without even chewing.
