Many people are under the impression that such children can never lead a normal student life and will never have a proper academic life. But it is hardly so. The only difference is that they need special care and attention from their parents and support systems. However to begin with first you must identify the problem you must know that you child is suffering. Consult a doctor immediately if you notice the following 8 conditions:

1.    Your child speaks in timid and slow manner
2.    He lacks in vocabulary
3.    He has an inborn tendency to leave the studies midway without trying too much
4.    He lacks concentration and enthusiasm about learning anything
5.    He fails to understand the main ideas and logics
6.    He fails to remember even easy and simple things within short span of time
7.    His pronunciation of words is strange
8.    Is there any other sensory disorder is present within him

If any of these factors is present within your child, he may have suffering from learning disabilities. You may help him by keeping the following tips in mind:

•    Always make a reward system for any of his good work.

•    Encourage him. This will develop an inner confidence in him which will assist him in many ways in the future.

•    Try to give him different puzzles and brainteasers which can strain his mental muscles. Sudoku is a good choice for this.

•    Don’t set high targets before him which are difficult to achieve. Remember the golden word ‘ Slow but steady wins the race’

•    Spend as much time as you can with him. Interact with him frequently to share his feelings, know his ideas, and hear him attentively .Try to be his friend not guardian.

•    Make him meditate. Meditation is very simple. Just ask him to close his eyes, clasp his fingers, relax his entire body and enjoy the inner silence within. Whenever there is a thought, tell him to observe his normal natural and soft breathing. This technique can do wonders for him.

•    Try to narrate tales of successful people to him.

•    Keep a weekly schedule with behavioral psychologist for him. Make sure it does not become a burden for him. The visits should be pleasurable.

•    Always maintain a learning environment in your home. This encourages the child to learn.

•    Keep your patience. Don’t get excited about little naughty things of your child.

•    Try to arrange for different audio visual aids for learning. Self-learning VCD is another perfect toolkit for it. Pictorial representation and symbolic figures can enhance your child’s learning in many ways.

•    Make sure that your child has at least couple of good friends. Boredom should be kept miles away from him.

•    Your child should be always engaged in any constructive work Never allow his brain to be idle.

•    Give him good nutritious diet; serve him food in small proportions throughout the day.

•    He should have good sound sleep every day.

•    To improve his handwriting skills, use word processor and similar tools.

•    Above all remember that proper guidance and counseling will make your child’s life a bright and successful one.

It is not easy bringing up a child who has a learning disorder. You need loads of patience and have to make innumerable sacrifices. But when you see your child showing results you feel amply rewarded!
