Detecting conduct disorder in children

  • Conduct disorder is a condition where a child constantly fails to adhere to the basic rules of proper conduct. They tend to have anti social tendencies and cause harm and hurt to the others around them. They fail to learn form their negative past experiences and continue with their experiments that can cause severe harm. It may start right from early childhood or perhaps during adolescence. Genes and the brain structure of the individual also play a significant role in conduct disorder.
  • Conduct disorder is not too difficult to trace if a close watch is kept on the child. This is because these kids do not make much of an effort, if at all, to hide the wrongs done by them. They go on harming others and owing to their aggressive nature they hardly make friends. Generally they would be seen surrounded by such kids as themselves who enjoy aggressiveness, or those who appreciate them for their deeds. There are a number of symptoms that can suggest the presence of the condition of conduct disorder.
  • The first and the most obvious sign would be a regular tendency to bully and fight. These kids tend to be anti social by nature and are constantly getting involved in violence related activities. It may be fighting and buying kids of the same age, kids younger in age or even those who are much elder to them.
  • Conduct disorder is also marked with regular rule breaking habit, often without any reason at all. They do not learn form the past punishments and continue breaking the rules even when it was not required.
  • Another way of detecting conduct disorder is by checking if the child has been showing cruelty or aggressiveness towards others including animals. They might show a tendency towards carrying weapons that are dangerous by nature. Mugging, forced sexual activity, snatching purses, etc are other symptoms conveying grave conditions.
  • Conduct disorder also causes one to become destructive towards property. They set fires, break things or cause destruction to things belonging to the others. Often there would be absolutely no reason for this. For instance, they would harm things belonging to others even though they have no apparent enmity with them or do not gain any form of satisfaction from such activity.
  •  Those suffering from conduct disorder not only harm others but are also capable of causing harm to themselves by drinking, smoking and drug abuse. This often starts during adolescence, and the child soon gets heavily addicted to these factors.
  • However before detecting conduct disorder, it is important to speak to the child regarding his or her behavior. Often only a small counseling by parents is all that is required to get the child back on track. Many a times what we perceive as conduct disorder could be nothing more than peer influence or the feel of the need to show off, something that is quite common among kids of growing age.
  • If the misconduct is not frequent or too severe, and can be reasonably controlled by scolding and talking to the child, there is no need to worry. Check if the child fears punishment and if he or she learns from it or not. If yes, then perhaps you can take matters easy. However there is a reason to worry if there seems no way out to get the child under control or to make them behave well, or if the charges of misconduct seem to be touching extreme levels. In such cases professional help must be sought.
