Detecting learning disorders with the help of learning disorder symptoms

Learning disability is a condition that is best treated when detected easily. Children with learning disabilities cope better if the parents and the teachers are successful in catching the problem during the early stage of life of the individual. If you feel that someone close to you may be suffering from learning disability, here are some symptoms to watch out for:

Trouble with writing

Learning disabilities concerned with writing revolves around a trouble in the physical writing form, as well as trouble with synthesizing and comprehending the information. Generally those with this disorder find it difficult to form words or even letters. The disability could be expressive too, meaning the individual faces trouble with organizing his or her thoughts while writing.

While children take time to develop neatness and accuracy in writing, those with a learning disorder could be facing serious trouble on this front. Their handwriting remains practically illegible despite constant practice and efforts. Spellings are not consistent enough and the overall writing remains disorganized and jumbled.

Reading related learning disorder

This type of learning disorder is often known as dyslexia. The child finds it not only tough to understand the meaning of what he or she is reading, but may not be able to recognize the words. They may confuse among such words that look similar, for example confusing ‘b’ and‘d’ or confusing ‘65’ with ‘56’. The speed of reading as well as the fluency is also affected. If the child does not show improvement in spite of constant efforts and teaching then it is necessary to seek help.

Symptoms of mathematics learning disorder

These kids find it difficult to deal with the numbers. This problem can be traced at the very first step when one learns basics of mathematics such as counting. They find it difficult to grasp the concept of counting, and recognizing and copying down the numbers properly. Addition, multiplication, etc do not come easy, since these children find it tough to remember and understand the mathematical signs. Repetitive mistakes and difficulty in taking hold of the concept and retaining them are common features.

These symptoms are often related to auditory or visual processing.

Auditory processing difficulty basically refers to the problem with hearing and understanding things correctly. This concept is included in the concept of learning disability since the power to hear and analyze what is heard correctly is one of the most important aspects of learning. People with this disability find it tough to distinguish between similar sounding words. They also often tend to hear sounds at an incorrect speed that obviously makes understanding of the words tough.

With a learning disability connected to problem with visual processing, the child faces trouble with the processing of what he sees. For instance, he may not be able to differentiate between various shapes, and might tend to reverse the numbers or the letters. Distance and depth may not be perceived well. Hand and eye coordination is also effected.

However, it is extremely important that the symptoms are judged after carefully considering the child’s age and the teacher’s efforts. Compare the child’s development with other kids of the same age, preferably studying with the same teacher, so that the child is facing exceptional trouble and that is help required. In case any of the symptoms are present, it is best to seek professional help so that the child can improve without wasting any precious learning years. It also helps in the sense that the child gets corrected before he or she can develop a low self esteem.
