During the many years in which I’ve been forced to deal with binge eating by myself, I never knew I actually had a problem that was something more than just an uncontrollable appetite. It is very hard to admit you have a problem that goes well beyond physical causes. Metal problems, emotional related diseases are the ones that take the longest to cure and it often takes a lot more than a fistful of drugs to get rid of them. All the emotional and physical signs of binge eating are right there from the very beginning, but you are probably too absorbed by all your other problems to even care about this. I went on for years, ignoring the emotional and physical signs of binge eating, and this only lead me to a series of health problems, that were all related to this disorder and which I only recognized a long time after they appear, with the help of a doctor.
One of the most striking things I remember from the period in which I was binge eating is the fact that I was somehow aware of the fact that eating like that is not normal. Because I was starting to feel like a freak, I tried to hide my habits, and always ate at home huge quantities of food. At work, I used to stuff 2-3 candy bars into my mouth while hidden in some corner. There were the signs of binge eating that should’ve alarmed me from the beginning, because they showed the shame and all other symptoms.
Although they might differ from person to person and sometimes having just one symptom can give a positive diagnosis to binge eating, these following are the basic and most frequent emotional signs of binge eating:
- Once you start eating you can not stop until you are sick. - You eat without chewing properly, consuming huge quantities in just minutes. - You eat when no one sees you, even if you are not hungry. - You avoid eating in public and you have food reserves to eat later, when no one is looking. - You eat at any given moment; you have no meal schedule whatsoever. - You are much stressed, and the stress can only go away while you are eating. - You are ashamed of the things you eat, and you constantly lie about this. - When you are binge eating, you feel out of control, like someone else is controlling you body, you can’t enjoy the food, you don’t even feel the taste. - You would always eat some more, it is never enough. - Food is your drug, and when you don’t have it you feel just like an addict without a fix. - You are more than obsessed with your weight, and feel unable to control it and to control your eating habits.
So, this means that we binge eaters are somewhat aware that we have a problem, but we are trying so hard to hide it that we end up believing that we are some kind of freaks everyone would laugh at if we confessed our problems. Without getting help, there’s no way to cure this, so the first step is admitting this is a problem that should be made public.
Some people are also showing physical sings when start binge eating. Sometimes it takes a while for this to show, but the signs that fire the alarm for binge eating are there regardless of the person’s weight. You might show binge eating symptoms like:
- Gaining weight fast, even if you’ve been thin all your life. - Feeling tired and heavy. - Being thirsty all the time. - Not being able to lose any pounds. - The abdomen gets ballooned and tensioned, even if you are not overweight. - Stress induced headaches that are ameliorated while eating.
Even if genetics has a word to some in binge eating, all emotional and physical signs can be determined exactly for each person, and they can be cured through therapy and by going to support groups that can introduce you to people suffering from the same condition.
