People who suffer from Bulimia are overly worried about their looks and weight but they still overindulge in food. They overeat and then try to burn all the calories by exercising and vomiting. This repeated bingeing and vomiting adversely affects not only their body, and even more harshly on their emotional welfare. There are physical and emotional symptoms of Bulimia which tend to overlap and have the tendency to affect each other.
Indulging in over eating and then purging it out by vomiting or use of laxative becomes a way of life for bulimia victims. These people also isolate themselves from people around as they need to stay aloof from people when they indulge in over eating then purging. They also have a guilt feeling and are shameful of their appearance. They are also characterized with their over zealous behavior where they want to achieve everything.
Bulimia has some physical symptoms which may not be as apparent as that of anorexia though they are devastating.
Constant vomiting to flush out all the food eaten causes the stomach acid also known as hydrochloric acid, to erode the tooth enamel, thereby causing tooth decay. This also causes the salivary glands to enlarge. Vomiting is usually induced by fingers. This causes the back side of the hand to get scarred due to constant contact with teeth. Dehydration may also happen due to constant vomiting as vital fluids found in the stomach and the body are washed out. Repeated vomiting may also damage or rupture the esophagus.
Vomiting all food has other side effects also. Purging leads to draining out all the important nutrients like sodium, potassium and chloride from your body. This causes an electrolyte disparity that is very dangerous to a person. An electrolyte imbalance causes problems like Hypokalemia or a situation where there is abnormally low potassium which can lead to paralysis, cramping and heart palpitations.
Hyponatremia is a situation which causes abnormally low sodium in the body that causes convulsions, fatigue and cramping. It is a situation where the body has extremely low chloride. Chloride controls the sodium levels in the body.
Electrolyte imbalances have fatal outcomes as the body cannot control the heart beat rhythm with the help of electrical impulses. Many girls and women who are victims of bulimia suffer from Amenorrhea. With no proper nutrition intake for the body it becomes difficult to have normal menstrual cycles. This may not be a common occurrence but in worst cases causes the stomach to tear or rupture as it may not be able to handle the large amount of food intakes at one time.
Some of the emotional and mental symptoms of Bulimia Nervosa are behavioral changes that affect a person directly.
The worst outcome of bulimia in people would be the self destructive ways adopted by them and their impulsive behavior. They resort to fatal habits like smoking as it prevents gaining weight. Self destructive ways of cutting oneself or other ways to self harm is also an emotional symptom. Indulging in sexual promiscuity and Kleptomania is also one of the many behavioral problems of bulimia sufferers. Low self respect and depression are often found in bulimia patients.
There are many causes of bulimia be it cultural, biological or psychological; curing someone out of bulimia is very difficult. Professional help is a must to treat bulimia victims. Sometimes psychiatric help may also be needed to get the person out of mental depression. On an average around ten percent of bulimia sufferers die and the main cause is dehydration caused by electrolyte imbalance.
