If someone known to you is suffering from Chemical dependency and you are willing to help him come out of this state, first of all you need to understand Chemical dependency and its treatment. It has been established that Chemical dependency is a disease in which if left untreated may have harmful consequences which is equal to life threatening effects.

A person suffering from Chemical dependency exhibits different types of physical, emotional and social symptoms which may lead you to make a distance from such a person but for helping someone with chemical dependency, you need to understand his mental state and extend your help and guidance to help him come out of this state. Although no one wants to be close to or be friends with a drug addict or with someone who is abusing alcohol, yet this is the time when a friend can help his friend understand the consequences of such addiction and guide him to abstain himself from indulging in such addiction.

It has been proved that chemical dependency can be treated. Treatment of chemical dependency starts from abstinence. For making your friend abstain from use of drugs or alcohol you certainly need to spend time with him and keep his mind busy with other work in which he can indulge him.  Whenever he craves for intake of alcohol or drug, you have to make him feel that it is going to ruin his life and family and also his health. You have to encourage him to abstain from these and quote examples before him of other persons who have quit drugs and alcohol and are leading a normal and much happier life. All personal, family and risk issues must be explained to him by you.

A friend can be a best counselor for an addicted person. You should make him realize that addiction is a sort of disease and he needs treatment to get out of it. You should understand that treatment works and try to make him understand too. A body detoxification program may be necessary for him before the start of the treatment. He may be taken to group therapies, lectures and discussions on chemical dependency treatment.

The right time to talk to your friend and counsel him is not when he is drunk or on a high. Meet him when he is calm, in a lonely place or coffee shop and talk to him showing you care for him and his family. Try to persuade him to abstain from such use of alcohol or drugs by highlighting its impact on his career or spouse and children, whom he loves most. Although a person may not care for himself but he may be moved when a question of impact on children’s brain is raised. If he realizes that he is doing wrong and wants to get rid of his habit you should immediately take him to professional centers for rehabilitation and seek their help.

Helping a friend with an addiction may help him realize the problems of addiction from an emotional, spiritual and physical perspective. This may light up his mind and he may want to find out ways for leaving his habit. In such cases, you can become his guide and counselor and help him come out of it. It has been proved with the help of surveys and research that close friends and relatives play a very active role in helping someone with chemical dependency.
