Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most common of all the mental disorders and affects more than 2 percent of the population. It is characterized by obsessive compulsions and unusually repetitive behaviors that people perform in an attempt to reduce unwanted thoughts and anxiety.
These OCD obsessions are persistent and cause marked distress making it difficult to pursue everyday life by interfering with school, job, and daily functions.
The fear of the side effects of traditional medicine is driving more and more people toward the use of home remedies and natural products to remedy health problems, and is achieving favorable results, with little or no side effects.
Following are some useful tips:
· It will not help to tell a person with Obsessive-compulsive disorder to relax and not worry so much.
· Many OCD sufferers try to conceal their disorder from friends, and the people at school and work. Thus it is vital to keep an intimate and relaxing friendship with such individuals.
· Avoid drugs and alcohol. Alcohol and illicit drugs may worsen OCD symptoms. Also, get appropriate treatment for a substance abuse problem.
· Check first before taking other medications. Contact the doctor who`s treating you for OCD before you take medications prescribed by another doctor or before taking any over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals or supplements. These may interact with your OCD medications.
· Nutrition is important for a healthy nervous system. Lack of certain nutrients has been associated with OCD. Replenishing the diet can have beneficial effects. These nutrients are: ? Essential Fatty Acids, Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 from fish oil, flaxseed oil, hempseed oil, hempseeds, grape seed oil, pumpkin seeds, pine nuts, pistachio nuts, sunflower seeds (raw), olive oil, olives, borage oil, evening primrose oil, black currant seed oil, chestnut oil, chicken, spinach, kale and other foods.
· Some herbs, such as valerian, may make you sleepy. Never drive or operate machinery if you take any supplement or medication that is identified as “relaxing” or “calming”.
· Too much caffeine can add to OCD. An overabundance of coffee, tea and soda has obvious consequences.
· Sugar highs and lows will affect a person with OCD. Keeping blood sugar constant will help moderate symptoms of these issues.
· Yoga and Meditation helps in a great way.
· Look deep within and find why you so desperately need that control. Learn to let the control go, or give it over to a less obtrusive obsession (like pressing your lips together, or counting your teeth with your tongue) whenever you feel anxiety or a compulsion arising.
· Meditation and relaxation techniques would be the way to go. Meditation is mainly about the breath. Start with a 5 minute session and try to build up to 20 minute sessions one or two sessions a day it up to you. The technique is very simple. The point of what you are trying to do is to clear you mind of all thoughts, this isn`t easy for anybody but particularly people with OCD but in time it will get easier.
As soon as you are aware you are having a thought you just say to yourself I have noted that thought and I will think about it after my meditation or tomorrow or when ever. The reality of this is usually you never bother, but, anyway that what you tell yourself. It`s that simple. Initially it will be very hard to stop your thought`s popping into your head. This is normal don`t get angry with yourself, but after a few weeks of practice it will get easier and easier.
