There is a strong correlation between anxiety/panic disorder and low levels of certain vitamins and minerals. There are several things you can do to restore this balance in your body:
1. Take calcium, magnesium, and b-complex vitamin supplements
2. Avoid refined sugars and carbohydrates, and instead eat foods low in sugar and containing whole grains
3. Avoid coffee, tea, and cola sodas (or any other drinks with caffeine)
4. Avoid alcohol and drugs, as these tend to use up your bodies supply of important vitamins and minerals when your body metabolizes them. 5. If you consume artificial sweetners, stop! Splenda, Nutrisweet (Aspertame), and Sugar Alcohol should be avoided. 6. The way you look at your attacks really does affect them. If you stop thinking of them as attacks and start thinking of them as symptoms of a badly trained body, its a little easier to cope. Face it, you`ve trained your body this way - both in how you react to the anxiety and how you subconsciously think about it. It`s a cruel reality, but once you realize it, it’s like a light at the end of a very long dark tunnel. 7. A slightly off the wall idea is to sniff or smell baby powder. The idea behind this is to trigger thoughts of a happier time. The familiar and relaxing scent, such as baby powder, will help you shift your thoughts from the stressful or panic inducing to the calm or relaxing. This is the basic idea behind aromatherapy too. 8. Staying active is another great remedy for panic attack. It is more of a preventative approach to dealing with panic attacks. By exercising regularly, you will be balancing out the adrenaline and cortisol in your body. You are giving the body a way to release these powerful hormones naturally so that they don’t make themselves known as a panic attack. 9. Breathing is also an incredibly helpful home remedy for panic attack. Combine it with closing your eyes a bit like meditating if you want. The idea behind this is to calm your body down and slow your breathing. 10. An effective way to deflate the situation is to start counting backwards from 100. This helps to take your mind off the stressed situation and focus on something else altogether. A gentle massage on the back and neck can also help to relieve tensed muscles and impart rest to the entire body while helping the individual focus more clearly. 11. Count backward from 100. "The purpose is to focus on something specific such as counting or touching, but not on your anxiety," says Jerilyn Ross, director of the Ross Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders in Washington, D.C., and president of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America. "Counting backward, counting the stripes on the wall, snapping a rubber band--doing anything that takes your mind off your panic attack helps, because it refocuses your thinking. You pay attention to things around you, rather than trying to fight the anxiety." 12. Get a massage. Particularly on the back of your neck, around your throat and in your diaphragm area, advises Dr. McCullough. "Those are the three areas where you can tense up because of anxiety. Rubbing your neck helps relieve tension, which can soothe or possibly prevent a panic attack, while breathing deeply relaxes the diaphragm area." When massaging the neck, massage only one side at a time. (If you rub both sides too enthusiastically, there`s a risk you may cut off your blood supply and become unconscious.) 13. Switch to decaf. People who get panic attacks are often highly sensitive to caffeine, says Alexander Bystritsky, M.D., assistant clinical professor of psychiatry and director of the Anxiety Disorders Program at the University of California, Los Angeles. So if you`re prone to panic attacks, try to limit your intake of coffee, tea, chocolate and colas that contain caffeine. 14. Another way to deal with panic attacks is to discussing issues with your loved ones. Talk to your wife and friends. Remember that you can get help for your panic attacks and also remember that you are not alone. Panic disorder is actually incredibly common and so you should never feel as though you are going crazy. |
