Depression causes a person to remain sad most of the time debilitating his/her normal thoughts and actions. It is more dangerous in a child as she/he is going through a state of physical, mental, psychological and emotional development.

Depression affects the emotional development of a child in more than one ways. There are equal chances to retard a child from his emotional development as there are to give his emotions a negative direction consequently transforming him/her into an antisocial individual.

The child which is depressed most of the time has no interest in studies and sports thereby eliminating the factor of positive competition out of his personality. This makes him lack the ability to compete and fight for him thereby making him loses the emotional component of competition.

A child is meant to love which he/she will not if he is depressed and the behavior of the child towards his parents and siblings becomes cold and emotionless. He/She is not interested in spending time with his/her parents and relatives and prefers to sit alone and do nothing. He/She feels like a social outcast and cannot meet with people. The most important part of the emotional personality of the child which is love and affections towards his/her parents and siblings fails to develop properly. This has a very bad impact on the child. Sometimes if the child is suffering from persistent negative thoughts and this is the basic cause of depression than his emotions may also take a negative turn and he may dislike or sometimes even hate his/her parents. This makes him/her emotionally unstable as well and he/she may burst into crying spells without any specific reason at all. Such crying spells and tearfulness further damages the emotional aspect of the child’s personality.

A depressed child is least interested in the activities at school. He/She doesn’t like to do anything at all and lags behind other children in studies and sports. But this loss doesn’t matter to the child at all and he/she has no consideration for it. Thereby he/she doesn’t want to compete with anyone and this makes him lack the most effective driving emotion required to prosper in life and have success. A depressed child is not concerned with failure or success and is not affected in the way he/she should by both of these. This deficiency may cause the child to develop a negative frame of mind and make him/her think that everyone around him/her wants him to fail. This negative frame of mind makes him paranoid and destroys his personality.

Due to lack of interest in everything a depressed child doesn’t intermingle with other children of his age group making aim socially ill with no friends. This lack of friends has serious effects on his personality. He/She fails to share his/her feelings, thoughts and emotions. By keeping all this to their self and their general negative thought pattern he/she makes wrong conclusions about different things destroying his/her personality further.

The depressed child thereby exhibits a lack of interest and activities .He/She has a poor emotional development and he does not have any good feelings towards his/her parents, siblings, friends and companions. He/She is lost in his/her negativity and has no abilities to go on with the normal social circle around her/him. He/She develops an antisocial attitude and is absorbed in his/her own thoughts and feelings. This ruins his/her personality and can make him/her suffer from various personality disorders as well. Due to distortion in the emotional developmental patterns of the child he is not liked and this may cause further depression.
