Autism is of various types and has been categorized on the basis of the severity of symptoms. They are (a) Classic Autism, (b) Asperger Syndrome and (c) Retts Syndrome. The real cause of autism is yet to be fully understood. The majority emphasizes on its genetic origin but social factors and the surrounding also plays a vital role in developing autistic characteristics in a person.
A child does not initially reveal any direct symptoms of autism. But as children develop fast at an early age, the first behavioral trait may strike abnormal to the parents is lack of interpersonal skills in the child. Autism is not an infection or contagious disease. It is just that a child’s brain has developed differently. Its ramification is apparent as the child becomes withdrawn and tends to be an introvert.
The toddler is not willing to interact and shows a total lack of response to their parents. An autistic child lacks communication and social skills of a normal child. These symptoms are manifested in a child between the ages of 18 months to 3 years, and at times can be detected in newborn babies, too. Autism is more prevalent amongst boys and its symptoms are noticed in the early stages of the child’s life.
The autistic baby does not make any direct eye contact with their parents. They appear to be focusing more on other objects which are inanimate and moving. They also appear too calm and do not cry much. Toddlers lying still for hours without crying seem strange and may display symptoms of autism. Such babies do not play, smile or interact with other babies.
An 18 month to 3 years old autistic child often looks distracted. Their attention wonders to other objects when parents want to communicate with them. They have difficulty in responding to sound or words. They repeat many times the same sound and take a long time in grasping the words. An autistic child has unusual mannerism and they like to repeat these traits many times.
It has to be noted whether the child repeats the mannerisms or motor movements continuously without any reason. Such children are also not very imaginative. They are not interested in indulging in make believe games or other games where they can pretend to be fairy tale characters. Any change of daily schedule or routine upsets the autistic person. If parents note that the child is not comfortable with the changes or gets disturbed with any alteration in their daily routine or gets frightened while waking up when it is still dark, indicates that the child may have autistic symptoms.
The autistic child has a tendency to rock on their heels and does not understand hand gestures or body language. They also do not respond when their name is being called and usually have an expressionless face as well as a monotonous voice. They seem to have a tendency to cause injury on oneself and are unafraid of danger. Being aggressive or very agitated and then withdrawing or screaming often marks the behavioral traits of an autistic child. They are also disorganized, offer little cooperation and lack self confidence.
Other relevant autistic symptoms include not talking much or using the language properly. They often lack proper grammatical composition in their sentences. If a baby or a child exhibits some or all of these symptoms, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician immediately. Through some simple tests, they can confirm the parents’ fears or ease their concerns.
