Chemical dependency can be referred to as an illness which is recognized by one’s dependence on mood altering chemicals, alcoholism and drug addiction. When a person becomes chemically dependent, he is unable to abstain from drinking alcohol, taking drugs and other chemical in spite of knowing that it may have serious health consequences. These people even do not realize the economic, social, spiritual and legal consequences attached to their consuming these intoxicating substances.
Chemical dependency is sure to exhibit itself from the behavior of the person suffering from it. A chemically dependent person will never admit that he is an addict but his symptoms will let anyone close to him know about his problem. The main signs and symptoms of chemical dependency can occur physically, in family relations, at workplace and in the society.
The physical signs and symptoms that will show that a person is having problems with chemical dependency are frequent blackouts during alcohol or drug use in which the person is not able to remember his period of intoxication. There may be a rise in the physical complaints leading to frequent visit to the doctor, dentist and hospitalization. The overall appearance and the dressing sense of the victim also seem to deteriorate. He may face emotional crisis and will try to abstain himself from others and want to stay lonely.
Family members are the best person to recognize if one of the family members has become a victim of chemical dependency and the behavior and signs that can be recognized by them are your loneliness, abstinence from family social gatherings, withdrawal from activities etc. Someone who is addicted to alcohol or drugs may lose his temperament soon and may also enter into frequent arguments and quarrels with his spouse and use abusive language amongst children and spouse. Frequent use of drugs and alcohol may also lead to sexual problems and impotency. A spouse initiated divorce may crop up for all these family problems that are a result of chemical dependency.
Certain signs and symptoms of chemical dependency may also show up at your workplace such as a sudden decrease in the quality of work performance, frequent wrong decisions made, falling sick frequently and abstaining from work, borrowing money from colleagues making false excuses and not repaying in time etc. These things may make co-workers gossip about your behavioral attitude and make you feel lonely also.
In the society or the community also, victims of chemical dependency will show certain change in attitude. This will include less participation in community affairs, sudden change in the friend circle and not being so friendly with the old friends, coming to the gathering drunk and in an disorderly manner, remaining alone in gatherings and not mixing with others etc.
The above signs and symptoms exhibited by any individual prove that he is chemically dependent and has also been proved by the Doctors and Medical practitioners. Different signs and symptoms may vary from person to person but overall an individual who is suffering from chemical dependency is sure to show off few of the above signs.
Understanding signs and symptoms of chemical dependency is very crucial so as to provide the needed intervention and help to the person suffering from it and helping him come out of the situation. We have to understand that the person who is suffering from this is a patient who needs help can make him come out of this situation and lead a normal life once again.
