Depression is quite a serious ailment both in adults and in children and proper diagnosis and treatment both is required in order to help someone suffering from depression. The treatment of such a child can be carried out in two ways. First of all supportive measures must be taken by the parents and relatives of the child and ten if necessary medical treatment can be given. First of all the child should be reassured that depression is not something to be ashamed of or it is not anything like being crazy .tell the child that it is okay to have such feelings of sadness so that he expresses such feelings instead of hiding them which worsens the ailment. One should be honest with the child and the child must have total awareness of his condition. Hiding the reality from the child only deteriorates his condition and is of no help at all. Give your child the opportunity to go through pain because it makes him grow strong. The child must be given proper time to grieve even over small things because he has his own world where things are quite different. Proper attention must be paid on the symptoms of the child in order to help him. If any change is seen in the personality of the child or his mood for longer durations of time then professional help must be looked for. The child must be assured that it is ok to seek help when needed and he should have proper access to his parents and teachers whenever he needs. If the child takes very small things too seriously then he must be allowed to do so. His feelings should never be minimized or compromised. Although suicide in children is rare but serious attention must be paid to such problems. The parents must be aware about their effect on the child as it decides the behavior of the child. Also make the child understand depression according to his age. Some children can respond to this therapy well enough and there is no need for the drugs. The imbalances between various neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and nor epinephrine can be corrected by various drugs. These imbalances primarily cause the state of depression and thereby drugs are known for their role in the treatment of depression. Four groups of antidepressant therapy are in most common use. These include the following: Tricycles antidepressants are very useful. They elevate the mood of depressed individuals and re-establish their normal appetite and sleeping patterns. They also restore the energy level of a child. However it takes three to four weeks for an individual to respond to this therapy. These drugs include imipramine , clomipramine and other such drugs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors like citalopram and flouxetine are also quite useful drugs and are quite helpful in the treatment of depression. Drugs like venlafaxine that belong to the class of serotonin nor epinephrine reuptake inhibitors are considered to be the first line of therapy in individuals taking an antidepressant for the first time or not responding to other drugs. Monoamine oxidize inhibitors are also a class of antidepressants especially useful in case of atypical depression. However, they have a side effect in which they can cause severe high blood pressure in combination with different foods like smoked meat. These include moclobemide. If the episodes of depression grow severe then the last resort is electroconvulsive therapy which produces a generalized seizure in the body. It is useful in episodes of psychosis and after the development of suicidal tendency.
