Depression is a state of sadness persisting for a very long duration of time and occurring to often to interfere with the ability of an individual to perform normal functions.
It is a psychiatric ailment which is of debilitating type and is more difficult to spot in children than in adults. This is due to the reason that the child is not perfectly aware of his condition thereby, making it tough to mark the signs and symptoms that are specific for depression. However following are the major signs and symptoms which when evident in a child give rise to the suspicion of depression and by knowing these one can tell if someone is suffering from depression or not.
The behavior of a depressed child is much different from that of a normal one and the following changes whenever seen the parents should seek help.
A child having depression is tearful most of the time. He cries too often and is persistently sad in comparison to the normal children around him. He is most of the time hopeless and shows no interest in different activities. He is not even involved in his previously favorite activities. He prefers to be alone instead of being with friends and is a low energy child. He is bored most of the time even during his favorite actions. He cannot communicate well enough with his parents as well as his companions. Not only by this factor but also due to his general behavior he is not much liked and as a result is a captive of social isolation.
Such a child is full of guilt most of the time with features of irritability and hostility. He not only dislikes others but also himself and has no self esteem .He is much sensitive to failure and rejection .He hates school and even games. He has poor concentration both towards studies and sports. He has a rather self-destructive kind of behavior and likes to talk about death and suicide .He is not happy at home and mostly tries to run away. He has altered sleeping and eating patterns and is often complaining of physical illness.
The children who often cause trouble at school may be suffering from depression as well. A child sitting alone instead of spending time with friends must be suspected of depression. He thinks himself of being worthless and has a feeling that he is not important to anyone at all. He has no tendency to love and generally dislikes his teachers, family members, friends and even himself.
The childhood depression can also manifest it through physical illness. The child may frequently have mild to severe headaches at times. This may also be associated with anorexia and insomnia. The child may also suffer from various GIT problems of which diarrhea are the most common. Stomachache may also be present.
There is an increased suicidal tendency in such children. Sometimes they themselves can tell that they are not happy with their life or themselves. In fact they are not happy with anything at all. Nothing has any appeal for them and they cannot be motivated for anything at all. These children lack the ability to study well as well as to play well. They just cannot concentrate at anything at all. They have a continuous feeling of guilt as well and are always absorbed in strange non realistic sad thoughts.
All these signs and symptoms one or all of them whenever observed in a child the parents must consult a child psychiatrist because treatment strategy is essential for all cases of childhood depression.
It can be summarized that depression which is a serious ailment is found in children and can be characterized by agitation, sadness, and crying kind of behavior. They are not interested into anything and they don’t like anything as well.
