Learning Disabilities have been an issue in concern for a long time. Science has made its incursions into remote areas human brain and studied every detail meticulously to provide us with an elaborate view of its workings. Working of human brain is very complicated and learning disabilities are a very minute malfunction of the brain.
Scientists, for ages have tried to diagnose the cause of learning disabilities. Research shows that from environmental influence to genetic manipulations, learning disabilities are caused for a variety of reasons. Role of Genetics in learning disorder is equally important as the other factors contributing towards it.
Experts believe that heredity has an important role to play in learning disabilities. Children suffering from learning disabilities are sometimes found to inherit the disease from the genes of either of the parents. Problems like dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Syndrome (ADHD) are very much hereditary like asthma and blood sugar.
It has been found that a majority of children suffering from learning disabilities have a family history of learning disability. There is no question of denying the fact that genetic influence in learning disorder is very much likely. But we must also remember the fact that genes are affected by the environment as well.
One may be amazed to know that great personalities like Sir Winston Churchill, Alexander Graham Bell, Albert Einstein and George Washington, all suffered from learning disabilities. The reason of their disease may be different but one thing is common with all four. All of them came out successful in the battle of life. If we suppose that genes were the cause of their disability then environment was the healer and vice versa.
Thus it becomes very difficult to pinpoint genetics as the only cause of learning disability. The chromosomal characteristic of an individual is responsible for the working of brain to a great extent. So it has been proved that initial stages of brain formation are very important for its proper functioning. Genes do have a bit of contribution in learning disability but we have to keep in mind the variety of other factors which are equally responsible for such a condition.
Genes and learning disorder have puzzled the scientists every time they tried to come to a conclusion. Researches have proven that learning disabilities are caused more in men than in women. This is because of the X chromosome which is very much responsible for brain constitution. But it could not be concluded yet that which gender is more susceptible to learning disability.
Moreover research has also vouched for the fact that mental ability of a child is enhanced and augmented with a stimulating environment and vice versa. A bit of care and treatment can cure a child from the clutches of learning disability. But then a question arises whether a hereditary or genetic disease gets cured? If yes, then how long is the period of cure? Are there any chances of relapse? Volley of questions accompany our thoughts when we think of a proper cure of learning disabilities.
Treatments given to children with learning disabilities across the globe have proved that the disease is curable. It may take time but one can get rid of it. But chances of relapsing are equally strong. Heredity and environment are correlated. So while treating patients with learning disabilities one must keep in mind the environmental conditions as well.
How much are the genes responsible for learning disabilities is still under research. But the ray of hope is that though learning disabilities have genetic influence but still the condition is curable. If it is ever proved that the role of genetics is very vital in learning disability then it may happen that sometimes in the near future we can get hold of some medicine which may prove beneficial for this kind of patients.
