There are many people around the globe suffering from this psychological and physiological syndrome. Bulimia slowly strikes people when they start worrying too much about their weight. They want to look extra thin and try to shed weight below the ideal weight. Many researches show that it may be in the family. It isn’t that they are over weight. It is just that they want to be extra thin to seek attention. Usually such people have a deep fear of becoming overweight and usually suffer from low self esteem.
Bulimia (Bulimia nervosa) is characterized by episodes of binge-eating followed by a loss of control in the amount of consumption of food. A patient of bulimia often tries to keep his weight in control by unhealthy way of throwing up after eating, obsessive fasting, and extreme use of various laxatives to flush out food, using enema very often or even excessive exercising.
Adolescent and young adult women are more prone to this disease than men. People suffering from Bulimia appear perfectly normal.
Bulimia can happen to anyone around you. It is difficult to diagnose at the initial stage if a family member or a friend of yours is suffering from it. It is 10 times more common in females than in males and affects 3% of young women. The condition becomes more symptomatic between the ages 13 to 20 years.
Symptoms for the diagnosis of Bulimia:
If a friend or family member is bulimic you can do a diagnosis of it yourself by looking for signs like the following-
1. Bulimia can occur with - binge eating and purging(self induced vomiting), or - nonpurging behaviors such as fasting or excessive exercise. 2. visiting the washroom repeatedly after having food 3. obsession with ideal or low body weight 4. enlarged glands in the face and neck 5. indigestion 6. constipation 7. irregular menstrual periods 8. dental cavities 9. dehydration and fatigue 10. exhaustion 11. bloodshot eyes 12. suicidal behavior 13. severe weakness followed by abdominal pain
Many self-destructive activities happen with the advent of bulimia: - Smoking- many people believe that smoking helps you in keeping your weight in control. So they resort to smoking in a big way. - - Impulsive behaviors- those suffering from bulimia have been found to indulge in impulsive behavior. They may also suffer from kleptomania, self-cutting and even sexual promiscuity. - - Alcohol and drug abuse- about 30% to 70% of bulimia patients resort to drugs and alcohol to fight stress or depression which comes with prolonged eating disorder.
Psychiatric Conditions Commonly Coexist with Bulimia
To know if someone is suffering from Bulimia it is important to know about his personal life and behavior when he is socializing with others. He may have the following psychological disorders which could be a reason for bulimia:
- mood disorders (major depression, bipolar disorder)
- anxiety disorders (panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder)
- substance related disorder (alcohol abuse, stimulant abuse, polysubstance abuse)
- personality disorder (narcissistic personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, anti-social personality disorder)
There is no medical treatment of bulimia if it is in the initial stage. It can be cured with proper cooperation and help with the family and friends, living in a healthy environment, and having high morale to stay and live a better life. If Bulimia has reached an advanced stage the person could be given medication along with psychiatric help.
Keeping the person only on medicines would not cure this disorder so a healthy and lively surrounding is necessary. The affected person should never be isolated as this would aggravate their condition. Emotional and mental support from the family is a very effective cure. With proper and timely detection of bulimia, help can cure him.
