Conduct disorder is basically a condition where one tends to be extremely aggressive by nature. This causes them to violate basic rules of conduct about not harming others, not destroying property etc. Such people have a tendency towards anti social behavior, and more often than not the cases for such activities cannot be ascertained at all. They do not have much fear of punishment, and also develop a tendency towards drinking as well as drug abuse.
The causes of conduct disorder mostly revolve around such negative factors that affect the psychology of one’s brain and cause it to alter and distort normal thinking patterns. Often the way they think is tough to define, since most of their actions do not make any sense or have any valid motive.
- The most common cause of conduct disorder is child abuse. This can range from various kinds of abuses experienced during childhood, including emotional, physical or sexual abuse. The worst case scenario is when the child suffered from abuse caused by parents or close ones. Generally those children who did not get any support to deal with the abuse and put an end to it are the ones who grow up to be the most aggressive. The nature of the abuse and its severity can have an impact on the behavioral pattern of the child immensely.
- Another common cause is family conflict. Kids with separated parents or from homes where fights were a regular feature grow up becoming destructive and aggressive by nature. It is important that the child gets love and affection of the family and is shown the brighter side of family life, so that he or she does not grow up feeling frustrated and is capable of adjusting with the world around him better.
- In fact it is not just family issues, but also the habits of the parents or the guardians that can have a major impact on a child, causing conduct disorder. For instance, if a child sees an elder being heavily into drugs or drinking, they have a greater tendency to fall out of regular behavioral pattern accepted in kids. Needless to say, it also prompts them to take up drugs and drinking early in life.
- While it is important to have a close knit family, it is also important to have the right kind of peer group, especially in case of the adolescents. Those who have experienced regular failures in life or have been through traumatic experiences may also tend to develop conduct disorder. Poverty has also been associated with this condition, since it can prompt a person to resort to unfair means of living and gradually making them habituated to the life of misconduct.
- However, often the causes of conduct disorder cannot be directly connected to emotional or psychological factors. The causes can be genetic too. A child whose close blood relatives have suffered from conduct disorder could be carrying the defective genes.
- Many a times it has been seen that the most severe cases of conduct disorder are those where the individual was subject to the causes listed above during early stages of life, often as early as infancy. If these kids are not treated during the early onset of the disease, they can grow up to be extremely harmful, causing damage and destruction not only to themselves but also to the society at large
