Only those who are suffering from serious skin ailments need to consult a dermatologist. The term dermatology includes both, surgical and medical. The ailment may be due to accidents, injury, and disorder of the genes which may be hereditary in nature. In such cases help of clinical cytology may also be sought. At times the dermatologist may have to treat the patient in coordination with the cytologists and if there are severe psychological aspects then even a psychiatrist has to be consulted. The skin being a visible organ of the body has deep repercussions on the mind if any illness creeps in.

Dermatology is the field of specialization of physicians called dermatologists. They specialize in the field of diagnosing and treating the skin problems and its appendages. The nails, hair etc are called appendages. Dermatological surgeons are involved in surgery related to the skin, including treating skin cancer, laser surgery, BOTOX treatment, soft tissue filling, liposuction and sclerotherapy among others.

An offshoot of dermatology is dermapathology which interprets skin tissues under a microscope. Pediatric dermatology deals with diagnosing and treating of skin problems of children. There are many other aspects of congenital syndromes which are covered in the field of dermatology in the States.
