Otolaryngology is the subdivision of medicine which specializes in the treatment and diagnosis of throat, neck, ears and neck & head disorders. This is an oldest specialty of medical in United States. An Otolaryngologist is mostly referred to as ENT physician. Special skills of an otolaryngologist includes diagnosing as well as managing different types of diseases such as larynx (voice box), sinuses, upper pharynx (throat and mouth) and oral cavity. So, they do the treatment, diagnose, and even manage the specific and specialty disorders.
For starting the practice of otolaryngology, they have to complete the both post-graduation as well as college that may be up to 15 years. For getting a certificate from the American Board of Otolaryngology, a candidate must have first completed his college, school of medicine that may be for four years, and should have minimum five years of training in specialty. And they also have to pass the examination of the American Board of Otolaryngology. Even an otolaryngologist can go for fellowship programs that can be of one or two years, respectively in any one of the areas of seven subspecialties. The areas of subspecialties are Otology, Sinus, Head and Neck, Facial plastics, Neuro-otology, Laryngology and Pediatrics. |
