Pediatrics is the discipline of medical science that is concerned with care of infants, children as well as adolescents. There are many national and international pediatric societies such as American academy of Pediatrics, Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Royal College of Pediatrics etc.

Pediatrics is different from normal adult medical science in various respects mainly due to difference in body size and changes due to maturation. Childhood is the phase of maturation and growth of various body organ systems of the body. Pediatrics covers problems such as congenital or birth defects, immunology, genetic variation, oncology etc. Apart from that, adult diseases like cystic fibrosis, sick cell anemia etc also come under the diseases covered by pediatrics. It specially deals with issues like immunity against various diseases, proper vaccination and infectious diseases.

The doctors who practice pediatrics are called pediatricians. A pediatrician is concerned with complete physical, physiological as well as social health of a child from birth till adolescence. These doctors can also be specialists in certain fields. Such as a pediatric cardiologist takes care of your child’s heart just like an oncologist treats him if he has leukemia. The doctors have to be especially compassionate while treating their young patients who are more vulnerable than adults both physically and emotionally.
