Psychiatry

Psychiatry means the treatment of mental illness. Primary goal of such study is to provide the patient with some type of relief from his mental and emotional suffering. It also treats problems arising out of substance abuse. The correct meaning of the word is “HEALER OF THE SPIRIT”.

The doctors who practice psychiatry are known as Psychiatrists. Many physicians prefer their mental patients to be treated by psychiatrists because they are specialized in such field and will be able to deal with the problems in a more descriptive way. There are many cases where it is impossible even for the psychiatrists to cure the patients.

The treatment also varies from person to person and patient to patient. Some may respond quickly while others may take a long time to recover. There are also many types of psychiatry like child psychiatry, adult psychiatry, emergency psychiatry etc. Each type of psychiatric treats the patient in a different way. Along with drugs, counseling is also done by counselors in most of the cases.

The field of psychiatry has gained importance over the years because of modern day stressful living. Research has pointed out a startling fact that even animals need psychiatric help at times.
