bariatric surgeon
Bariatric Surgery is the surgery of the stomach and the intestines. Those who are extremely obese or overweight, (about 100 pounds for men and 80 pounds for women, above the ideal weight), and have a body mass index of more than 40 generally go for this operation. Even those obese patients who suffer from diabetes type 2, or heart problems, or other health problems like severe sleeping disorders called sleep apnea opt for this surgery.
When a person is severely obese then diet control and exercise alone may not help. They are unable to shed their extra weight through these methods and hence they have to go for gastrointestinal surgery. In this surgery the weight loss procedure is propagated by reducing the food intake or by disturbing the digestive process.
Nowadays Bariatric Surgery is done through laparoscopic method. In this method, small incisions are made and through them slender instruments used for surgery are passed and the surgery is carried out. The scarring and the blood loss are minimized and the length of stay in the hospital is also reduced. Recovery is faster and there are fewer post surgery complications. However severely obese patients are not suitable candidates for laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery. |
